Trees

Trees

I think it is so important to have a few tree projects. Otherwise, students keep drawing that same apple tree. I have put together a few projects with trees in mind and they are all different.

This first project is a pen and ink drawing of a tree on an abstract watercolor background. I like the contrast between Realism and Abstract Expressionism and the black ink against a colorful background. I also used metallic watercolor.

Ribbon Trees

This project is inspired by Canadian based artist, Dana Irving. For the sketchbook assignment, students practice four different types of ribbon trees. Then they draw a rough draft of their own forest design. For the final, it needs to use gradations as well. The slides have all of the requirements.

Ribbon Trees

This is the Google slides I show for starting the Ribbon Tree project. This is a good first quarter project for Intermediate Art. The ribbon trees are simple to make and it gets them to practice gradation. Gradation is one of the four main goals to learn because it helps later with the advanced projects. The students are allowed to pick any of the ribbon tree styles and create their own forest scene. They are also allowed to pick any colors. It doesn't have to be natural.
