Positive and Negative Space

Project 1: Hand Cutouts

Students draw their hands as "Bunny Fingers" and "Cross your Fingers". Then they cut out the hands and glue them drawing or pencil side down on colored paper. This way it looks like a silhouette or in the positive and negative space style. Common mistakes are students drawing too dark and seeing it through from the other side when glued down and of course some students still glue it with the sketch showing.

Project 2: Plants with Gradation

I bring in real plants for students to draw them as positive and negative space. The plant also needs to extend to at least three sides of the paper. The plant and the background need a gradation. In general, students do very well with this project and looks great on display. I also bring in toy bugs for students to draw into the composition if they want to.

Project 3: Something vs Something

This is a fun project. Students have to create a composition in which there in one subject matter vs the other subject matter. It can be a fight, a race, etc. The requirements include that the subject matter take up at least 70% of the paper and use three colors for the background and the two different subject matter. Students need to draw three rough drafts, otherwise you have 80% of class turning in drawings of cats versus dogs.
