Fall Leaf Composition

Surreal Plant Life

Students are challenged to create drawing of at least seven fall leaves in an interesting or unique composition. They start with a sketchbook assignment on Fall leaves and gradation. Then they draw three different rough drafts. Ideas range from the leaves becoming something else such as my example to the left, as part of a scene, or even as a dress for a princess.

Sketchbook Assignment: Fall Leaves

Gradation is one of the big four concepts students need to master. This video reviews that.

Another Surrealism project

For advanced classes, I had students design a fruit, vegetable, or plant and transform it into something else. For my example, I drew grapes as dinosaur eggs and as they hatch, little t-rexes came out. The medium is pastel and ink. When students draw rough drafts, I warn them about the typical ones I see (ex. dandelions as lions and tulips with two lips) and encourage them to try something different. This is why I ask for three rough drafts in this assignment.

More Surrealism

This is a pen and ink drawing that I never finished with color. The idea was to have the eggs hatch with asparagus and crows born from it.
