Day Glow Portrait

Day Glow Portraits

I was very much inspired from Day Glow portrait photography for this project. An interesting artist to look at is German photographer Lisa Stroeher.  I thought the way to duplicate this concept in class was to have portrait drawn in blue pastel (blue is from the black light) on black paper and then painted with fluorescent paint for the day glow designs. For my own example, I had my daughter pose with her chameleon and took a picture. I then inserted that picture to Google slides. I formatted the picture to recolor as blue. This makes it easier to figure out the blue tones with the pastel. The google slides below shows the process and layers for my example.

This unit of study includes a portrait study in dry pastel, then rough drafts, and then the final. This project on a block schedule takes about five weeks and half the time on a daily schedule.

Warm-up: Pastel Face in Blue

By the time time we get to this assignment, we have already practiced face drawings with Monster Spotlight Portraits and you can find the face drawing practices there. For this warm-up, students find a photo of a face with strong highlights and shadows and save it. Then they open Google slides and insert the photo. From there, they format the image into the blue tone. I ask for blue because that is the color for black light portrait photography.

In class, I review the three basic face poses and then demonstrate how to layer the values with white, blue, and black pastels. I also demonstrate the eyes with the details. During the assignment, I also have daily one-on-one feedback to help students understand placement of values.

This presentation shows the steps for this Day Glow Portrait. Before starting the main assignment, students draw a rough draft of a person or skull with at least three patterns or designs that would be finished with the fluorescent paint in the final. It also needs one subject matter or object. My example has the chameleon, but it could be an accessory such as sunglasses. In class, I show many examples of day glow portrait photograpy. Many of which can found on pinterest.
